Perunchalangaiyattam
"Perunchalangaiyattam" is an energetic Tamil folk dance performed using attachments with large bells that stick to the shin. "Perun " refers to the large, "Chalangai" means bells and "Attam" means dance.,
This dance, derived from old martial traditions, was inspired by Tamil warriors' strength and combat skills, combining movement, rhythm, and storytelling.
The actors dance in unison, frequently recreating battle scenes while wielding chalangai. The ringing of the bells connected to the leather pieces, combined with drums such as thavil and parai, creates a majestic rhythm that represents discipline, power, and unity.
At Carolina Tamil Kalaikkoodam (CTK), we teach Perunchalangaiyattam as a unique blend of art and heritage, intended to inspire confidence, cultural pride, and physical power in students of all ages.
